The publication is a summary of Franciszka Themerson's exhibition "Lifelines" presented at the ŁAŹNIA Center for Contemporary Art 13.07-13.10.2019. Self-generation of Themerson’s compositions associates them with works of Paul Klee who proposed that art be ‘an image of creation,’ that it disclose the process of shaping leading to form. This connection is shown by drawings where criss-crossing lines are endowed with the potential of generating complex formal structures. The process of painterly synthesis occurring in the Themerson’s work thus leads to the kind of reversal of the traditional hierarchy between a drawing and the surface of colour: this is a line, endowed with the ability to generate images which constitutes painting’s painterly qualities, exposing at the same time their material character. This does not necessarily result in weakening of the role of colour; the latter appears locally from underneath layers of paint, acquiring at times intensity. Fragment of the text by Paweł Polit, curator of the exhibition.
